A lovely man

June 13, 2011

When I was at the hight of my anxiety and post scan tiny embryo madness the other day I sent an email to Dr Matthews … the consultant who nurtured me through the pre and post IVF time at Bourn Hall.

He just sent the most lovely reply … pragmatic and not offering false hopes but a very generous and sweet reply none the less and funny … he is comes from Kerela which is where I went to prepare for the IVF treatment … hence his comment.

I thought I’d share it on my muddle headed blog:

Dear Ellie
I can understand your anxiety and concern about the size of the baby on the scan, but as you rightly say yourself, these measurements cannot be precise, and there is always a variability from one woman’s scan to another’s.  Your little Spaniard (I would have preferred to call “him” a Keralite), whether he/she was 6mm or 9mm at the time of the scan, can continue to grow or not grow, and there is no predicting which way things will progress from now until the end of your pregnancy.

The important thing to remember is that, at the time of the scan, you had an ongoing pregnancy within your uterus, and nothing that you do or not do can influence its further growth.  You have to hope and believe that all things work together for good, and that you have made a very good start on this magical journey.  There is really no point in another scan just yet.

Keep me informed of developments.

With kind regards

Dr Thomas Mathews MD FRCOG

Medical Director
Bourn Hall Clinic

Just updating myself on the blog! He’s a wise man! And so kind to send you such a personal message, with his own beliefs (which I share) – that all things work together for good, and that ‘nothing you can do can influence its further growth’. Okay, well, maybe eating a chocolate digestive and putting your feet up – or is that just an old wives’ tale? Nonethless, it’s a good one! xxxooo Lisa

      Thanks Lisa …
shall try the chocolate digestive approach … the glass of water and a snooze is getting dull xx
