Flat on my back

May 5, 2014

I had a dream last night that I was flat on my back, snoring gently and I’d had 14 hour sleep, all in a row, I was sleeping a deep long refreshing sleep on Egyptian cotton sheets in a huge bed, spread out like a starfish in a cool room with a gentle breeze blowing in from the ocean that was lapping outside along the white sandy beach.

Then she woke up (one of her final teeth is coming through) and I realised I’d only had 3 hours sleep after all and it was just a dream. I ached from head to toe due to the cronky old mattress, I rolled over onto a small sharp plastic horse and realised I had a dinosaur sticker on the side of my face where it had become irrevocably attached to my dribble.

“Mummy, miky … Mummy at ONCE” … and the demanding bossy baggage abseiled out of her cot and into bed beside me, “this side Mummy, this side”.

I groaned and rolled over, back across the small spiky plastic horse and onto a hard back copy of Giraffes Can’t Dance. She latched on and then drifted straight back off to sleep leaving me not wanting to move for fear of waking her up again with the book spine prodding me in the ribs and the plastic horse embedding itself in my left thigh.

The dawn chorus started up outside and somewhere in the street two people had an argument about a parking space.

As the wide old Bard would say, “To sleep, per chance to dream”.
